A good way to start making icons is using adobe photoshop and open a new document/empty picture of the size 100x100. And then get a picture you like and shrink it so it can fit into the empty box.

I've recently entered a community which is called icons100. Which is a marathon on making 100 icons in 10 weeks on any subject you like. I choose Thunderbird the movie. So hopefully I can post a link or the icons here within a few weeks. If you're interested....?
